There are plenty of benefits to learning a language online, including convenience and flexibility. Online learning can also offer more relevant and engaging materials than traditional lessons, and the ability to learn with language experts no matter where you’re located.
Even with all the obvious benefits, you might still be wondering if online language learning is for you.
Below, we’ll look at some of the things you need to consider before you sign up for an online language course so you can decide for yourself.
Motivation
Are you a self-motivated learner, or do you need someone to tell you what to do? As an online learner, you may have video sessions with a language coach a couple of hours a week, but what about the rest of the time?
To make online learning work for you, you’ll need a lot of self-motivation to make language learning a part of your everyday life and keep working toward your goals.
Procrastination
On top of being self-motivated, you need to think about whether or not you’re a procrastinator—someone who leaves everything to the last minute.
Procrastinating won’t get you far in an online language course: Without an in-person class to attend and an instructor to check that you’re completing assignments on schedule, you’ll need to fight the urge to “save it for later.” Otherwise, work can pile up and you’ll fall behind. The most successful online learners know it’s important to stay on top of their studies to make progress.
Organization
How organized are you? Do you add every plan to a calendar, or do you like to “go with the flow”?
Online learning takes organization because you need to schedule time to study and review regularly. If you’re not organized, you’ll end up wasting valuable time you could have been using to improve your language skills. With good organization and planning, you can ensure that you have the time to learn effectively and consistently.
Personality
Learning online is (obviously) different from taking in-person lessons. For one thing, you don’t typically get to see the same group of people every day. If you’re someone who needs the social aspect of meeting up with your classmates regularly, chatting, and helping each other out, then online learning may be a challenge.
It is possible, though! As an online learner, you can create those opportunities yourself—for example, by joining language meetup groups or finding other learners online to practice with over Zoom.
Technology
Depending on the course you take, you’ll be required to use different types of technology to receive and share information, connect with your language coach, do your review lessons, and more. Are you comfortable with that, or are you someone who prefers more traditional methods?
Something else to keep in mind when it comes to technology is whether your Wi-Fi connection is strong enough. If you’re expected to log on to a video session regularly, for example, will your Wi-Fi support that? There’s nothing more frustrating than a video call that keeps freezing when you’re trying to talk or listen to someone.
The choice is yours
There are a lot of things to consider when you’re deciding whether learning online is right for you. Luckily, most of the challenges we discussed above can be overcome!
